Surface Water Quality

Comprehensive Assessment and Listing Methodology

San Juan River at sunset The Monitoring, Assessment, and Standards Section of  SWQB has documented listing methodologies (previously called Assessment Protocols) for determining use attainment in order to develop the State of New Mexico Clean Water Act (CWA) §303(d)/§305(b) Integrated Report and List.

The Comprehensive Assessment and Listing Methodology (CALM) explains how the SWQB evaluates existing and readily available surface water quality data and other information to determine whether or not surface water quality standards are being attained.  Written listing methodologies are necessary to consistently determine whether or not surface waters are meeting their designated and existing uses.  Protocols are updated as new and improved assessment tools and approaches become available.

The SWQB will invite the public to comment on the draft revised listing methodology on June 18, 2021, while concurrently soliciting surface water quality data for all surface waters of the state that can be compared to water quality standards published in 20.6.4 NMAC.
